About Us

How does the Project work?

The MDCP provides the infrastructure into which translational and clinical research studies are embedded to assist Markey Cancer Center, the University of Kentucky and regional scientists with investigational opportunities for cancer prevention, screening/early detection, and treatment by:

  • Maintaining a research partnership with 5th District health care providers
  • Facilitating research focused on screening and early detection of cancers with a community educational component
  • Working with community marketing experts and healthcare professionals to discover innovative and practical ways to promote Marty Driesler Cancer Project studies
  • Supporting the best possible treatment options for patients by bringing together the resources of community healthcare facilities and the Markey Cancer Center
  • Providing opportunity for Kentucky's 5th district constituents to participate in clinical trials.

What can the Project provide to scientists?

Since 2004, the Marty Driesler Cancer Project team has been involved in building mutually appreciated relationships with healthcare and community professionals in the 5th Congressional District.  We have worked with partner sites to transfer biospecimens to Markey Cancer Center’s Biospecimen Core Program, worked conjunctly with these sites in determining best practice for accrual of participants for five different studies, cooperated with local and commercial institutional review boards, and teamed with site marketing and public relations personnel to advertise studies.

We can—

  • Suggest protocol procedures that could facilitate best practice standards
  • Introduce scientists and key site personnel
  • Identify IRB connections if needed
  • Assist with any contracts that are needed
  • Assist communication during the life of the study
  • Connect scientists with community resources that can assist with the study
